Analysis of Steel Bracket using Finite element method(FEM) using STAAD Pro

What is Bracket?

The elements, made with steel brackets, are used for supporting floor and roof beams and

connecting columns at the foundation, to resist the uplift of the shear wall.

Hence for this purpose, we are using the above double bracket system with the following

dimensions and we take this as the user requirement.

Initially, we draw the nodes and beams, and then later we use plate elements of size

25 mm which is a quadrilateral plate element and created a mesh using the command in

STAAD PRO v8i.

The below figure shows the nodes created after adding the mesh where each steel plate has

finite elements of the plate which are then evaluated to find the accurate result.

The below diagram shows the steel bracket which includes all the plate elements (FEM)

which is demonstrated in green color.

The dimensions initially taken for thickness was 0.025m but later due to design consideration

we ended up taking 0.015m which is sufficient enough for this required design problem.

The supports are defined which is the fixed support that is introduced in the diagram.

The load case is defined which are the axial load at the intersection between the plate on the y-axis and the x-axis of the magnitude of 1 Mton which is introduced in the diagram.

ANALYSIS OUTPUT

1. Maximum Absolute plate pressure diagram

2. Maximum Top Stress Distribution

3. Minimum Top Stress Distribution

4. TAU MAX TOP STRESS DISTRIBUTION

5. MAX BOTTOM STRESS DISTRIBUTION

6. MIN BOTTOM STRESS DISTRIBUTION

RESULT:

Since there is no beam element there won’t be any shear force or bending moment diagram

however, due to the plate element we are able to view the Max absolute plate pressure,

Maximum & Minimum top stress distribution, tau stress distribution, and Maximum &

Minimum bottom stress distribution.

Inference:

The maximum absolute pressure is < 0.022 N/mm2 for the majority of the element plate

whereas at the joints it increases and reaches 58.2 N/mm2. Hence proper bolts or rivets

are provided to account for this absolute maximum plate pressure.

Hence, this article sums up about the analysis of the steel bracket using FEM.
